Dear Recovering Alpha Females and New Moms: Here Are The 3 Things Nobody Tells You About *Maturing* Into The Power of Motherhood
Spring 2015. Winter 2018. Summer 2019. In each of these seasons I birthed one of my sons, and a new version of myself. An old version of me also died.
As a recovering alpha female, I had much to learn about the stillness, softness, and greatness that comes with moving from maiden to mother.
In a society that glorifies youth, financial success, and teeth-grinding hustle above other forms of richness, there is little space for women to manifest their natural maternal maturity. When we embrace the natural slowing down of biological mothering, we can access our deepest wisdom and power.
Here are 3 affirmations that guided my rite of passage into motherhood in 2018:
I embrace a sense of grief and death-of-identity that comes with birthing new life.
I often asked myself: Are we truly experiencing a medicalized postpartum depression or are we shedding layers of ourselves, renewing our skin, re-defining ourselves, growing and rising as maternal warriors for our children? And is our productivity oriented system allowing us to take the time to rise? Is the village of the world allowing women to roar through this new power or are we solely here to serve? My hurt inner child needs me so I can become the mother and mature women I need to be.
There is a lot I do with my female and male clients to heal their inner child. Please start here: Take a few deep breaths and visualize your inner child. How old are you? What are you wearing? Where are you? What's fun for you? What hurt you as a child? Who do you need to forgive? When did you feel safety and belonging? If you didn't, what does your inner child ask from you?
I strive for a balance between hustling, seeking, and resting.
Our children need many forms of wisdom from us. We need to teach them how to awaken and inspire and drive action. We teach them how to sit in stillness to learn, digest, and absorb. We rest with them to understand what it means to recharge, understand, and integrate.
This is the type of intentionality it takes to change the world.
