The One Bullshit-Piercing Question that Helps High Performers Discover their Bottlenecks
In our daily modern lives, most of us live and lead from our "upper quartile" - head, neck, and shoulders.
We think, analyze, rationalize, and problem-solve from there for the most critical decisions in our life.
Did you know that:
For every piece of information the brain sends to the body, the body sends 9 back to the brain
The human gut contains over 100 million nerves. It's practically a brain
Our ability to perform is dependent on our physiological and chemical state, which is regulated by the body
Modern psychiatry has largely ignored the sensate dimension of our experience.
Over the past decade, "Somatics" has begun to emerge as a method for healing trauma, accessing authenticity, and achieving peak performance.
When we can locate emotions in our bodies, we can tap into our embodied wisdom to transcend what's holding us back.
One bullshit-piercing Somatic question I often ask my clients is this:
"When you pause your mind, and let your body speak, where would 'problem X' sit?"
And 80% of the time it's in one of these places:
The Throat
"I have a hard time fully breathing in and out", "It feels tight", "I feel like burning up" Our throat is where our truth sits - the center for communication and manifestation. Are you communicating your boundaries and asking for help? Are you proactive solving problems? Are you doing what you talk about?
I see a lot of men for whom their feelings get caught up in their throats; the fear of being too vulnerable or emotional. The Gut
"It's nervous, it feels numb, it feels de-attached, it feels warm". You can compare the gut (intuition) to an engine, life’s most powerful motor and source of energy.
When we do not use this superior intelligence, we start to feel head-heavy, and have a hard time ever feeling satisfied. As a leader this often means, that nothing or nobody is ever enough. The Shoulders
"I feel like melting, I can't let go, I feel small." . My question in return is simple and often leads us down a deeeeep rabbit hole of new breakthroughs and actions: What have you been shouldering in your life or recently that needs to go?
